The FCAT Writing Test is coming up for fourth-, eighth- and 10th-graders.

Here are some great tips to help your child be prepared...

FCAT TIPS

  1. Give your child lots of encouragement. A child who is afraid of failing is more likely to make a mistake.
  2. See that your child has a well-rounded diet.  A healthy body leads to a healthy, active mind.
  3. Make sure your child is well rested. Children who are tired are less likely to pay  attention in class or to handle the demands of classwork and tests.
  4. Try not to be overly anxious about test scores.  Too much emphasis on test scores can be upsetting to children.
  5. Make sure your child arrives on time for school.
  6. See that your child dresses comfortably.  Students should wear clothes that are comfortable and appropriate for the weather. Bring a sweater or something warm in case they get cold.
  7. If your child wears a hearing aid or glasses, be sure he/she remembers to use them during all testing sessions.
  8. Make sure your child receives any necessary test-taking accommodations.

I teach at Orangewood and I have to tell you that they do something that I think is wonderful to offset the tension the kids may be wexperiencing before the FCAT.  They have every child's parent write a letter of encouragement to help boost the kids' self esteem and redce their stress.  For the many kids who may not have  a parwent send in 1 of thwese letters they ask volunteers to write every astudent taking the FCAT ...every child reveives a persaonalized letter in an envelope and it is really amazing how wonderful it makes the kids feel!
